Hockey is on the fast track to success. Their debut album is an effervescent pop tablet, it fizzes with call-to-arms choruses, dirty guitars and club friendly disco beats. There are flashes of pop rock, dance funk and the Elton John-style piano stomps. Overall, it’s an eclectic sketch of a band brimming with ideas. With an armoury of songs and a full US tour, the band scored a major label deal with Virgin in 2008.

With echoes of the Bee Gees, Prince and Roxy Music, Tigercity’s funky, electro-driven indie-pop was born of a desire to avoid what Gillim calls the “scratchy post-punk guitar sound” New York bands have been milking for the past few years. Since the critically and commercially successful self-release of their Pretend Not To Love EP in July 2007, Brooklyn’s TIGERCITY has been touring almost continuously, bringing their brand of pop escapism to the masses.

Since the summer of fear and hate (2002), The Thermals have been cranking out three-minute, no-fi sonic gems with a neo-grunge attitude. When they’re not powering through one of their catchy anthems, they’re racking their brains to come up with ridiculous(ly bad) new sub-genres. Hey, they just thought of a new one! Just in time for the release of their new album, Now We Can See. It’s totally post-power-pop.

Local Natives make soaring, sky-scraping harmonies, dreamy orchestral melodies, and throbbing tribal beats that bash their way into your soul. Drawing a line from the vocal stylings of Crosby Stills Nash & Young and the Zombies through the more esoteric edges of post-punk and Afro-beat, this California five piece have communally crafted a brand of indie rock all their own.

Eluvium’s lambent ambient goes straight to the heart and the mind, weaving a mysterious and captivating sound into the landscapes of internal emotion, making him one of the most intriguing and successful ambient composers currently working. All of the feelings that many pop musicians rely on lyrics to convey are here, cloaked inside of sonic clouds.
“A magnificent set, awash in textures, atmospheres, moods, and emotion.”

In Cotton Jones, Michael Nau and fellow Page France alum Whitney McGraw pursue even dreamier sounds, weaving elements of folk, jazz and country into a woozily melodic quilt of Americana with psychedelic sensibilities. Cotton Jones’ full-length debut, Paranoid Cocoon, released in January, is a quiet storm of a record full of gorgeous, harmony-laden songs like “Gotta Cheer Up” that linger in the air like hazy, sweetly scented smoke long after they’re over.
