CafĂ© Eleven, The SJCC, The Closet, and Drift Magazine are uniquely uniting the city’s growing contingent of up-and-coming fashion designers under an official one-of-a-kind platform that brings fashion to the forefront of North Florida’s culture. It is an up-close and personal look at the areas fashion influencers with music from DJ Dan, beer and wine specials, Fashion Films and shopping featuring a range of jewelry, accessories and apparel from North Florida’s hottest designers.

This event is designed to put the spotlight on designers and the art of fashion. In recent years fashion design has become one of the most respected and personal forms of art. National media, movies, books, museums and television have embraced the art of fashion design. Fashion is no longer just about clothes. Its about artistic expression and personal inspiration. Many of the companies involved this year create their pieces by hand. It is often very satisfying to know that something you are wearing was created by the actual artist with their very own blood, sweat, and tears going into every piece. This is a chance to meet these inspiratonal individuals, whom have decided to create their own path in the world of fashion.

With about a month to go before the 3rd Annual Big Trunk Show, the event is booked to capacity and the designers are busy readying their lines for the public. The talent pool is deep this year, with a great mix of varying tastes being represented. Returning favorites from last year Bean Dip, Erin Healy Designs, PaperRoot, and Indi Loves Harlie will be in full force this year showing new collections as well as hard to find items from their past releases. As usual, there is a number of newcomers looking to make their mark on the fashion scene. One newcomer, Tara Ferreira Designs, makes one of a kind pieces for men, women, and infants by sewing desings on them using vintage neckties. Another is Michelle Hineline Handbags, whom makes one-of-a-kind handbags from vintage clothing.

One of the big changes at this year’s show is the variety of apparel that will be offered. Over the last couple years, the designers have offered mainly women’s pieces at the Trunk show. However, seeing the imense demand for pieces for men and children, many designers this year have expressed their intent to offer full collections for both men and children at this year’s show. The 3rd Annual Big Trunk Show is sure to have something for everyone this year. And being so close to the holidays, it is an easy way to support local artists while taking care of all of your holiday shopping needs.

The Big Trunk Show is a St. Johns Cultural Council event. The SJCC creates strategic alliances to access and utilize existing resources that explore the artistic potential of our artists and community while creating a positive economic impact for the county, the artists, the community and the Cultural Council which reinvests into community programs, art education, cultural real estate, cultural tourism, art in public places.

Monday – November 10th, 2008

A longtime friend of Definitive Jux leader El-P, rapper Murs first appeared as a solo artist in 2003, after nearly a decade of working with various groups in the underground. Based in Los Angeles, his first single was released in 1993, and came from a self-released album by his first group, 3 Melancholy Gypsies. The track barely made a dent, but it did catch the attention of indie hip-hop fans in the area. Through time, the group members became friends with Mystik Journeymen, who asked 3MG (their shortened name) to join him when he started the Living Legends collective in 1996.
Between both 3MG and the Living Legends, Murs rapped on several influential indie rap albums, appearing on more than 20 records, EPs, and singles within a seven-year period. When El-P started to pull together his Def Jux label, Murs contacted the producer and told him he would release his solo record for the company once he had the opportunity. His commitments to both the Legends and 3MG often kept him from working on the album, but after a few years of slowly putting together tracks, Murs finally delivered The End of the Beginning in the spring of 2003.

Featuring flashier production than his group projects, the album was more in tune with a mainstream hip-hop record, though projects with Anticon rapper Slug under the name Felt — A Tribute to Christina Ricci and A Tribute to Lisa Bonet — unveiled a more experimental side to his artistry. The rapper returned to solo work with Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition, a collaboration with producer 9th Wonder, in 2004. One of the tracks from that album, “Walk Like a Man,” inspired a movie starring Murs himself, along with Damien Wigfall. The soundtrack, Walk Like a Man, also appeared in mid-2005. Murs teamed up again with 9th Wonder to release Murray’s Revenge in 2006. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
