Café Eleven, The SJCC, The Closet, and Drift Magazine are uniquely uniting the city’s growing contingent of up-and-coming fashion designers under an official one-of-a-kind platform that brings fashion to the forefront of North Florida’s culture. It is an up-close and personal look at the areas fashion influencers with music from DJ Dan, beer and wine specials, Fashion Films and shopping featuring a range of jewelry, accessories and apparel from North Florida’s hottest designers.

This event is designed to put the spotlight on designers and the art of fashion. In recent years fashion design has become one of the most respected and personal forms of art. National media, movies, books, museums and television have embraced the art of fashion design. Fashion is no longer just about clothes. Its about artistic expression and personal inspiration. Many of the companies involved this year create their pieces by hand. It is often very satisfying to know that something you are wearing was created by the actual artist with their very own blood, sweat, and tears going into every piece. This is a chance to meet these inspiratonal individuals, whom have decided to create their own path in the world of fashion.

With about a month to go before the 3rd Annual Big Trunk Show, the event is booked to capacity and the designers are busy readying their lines for the public. The talent pool is deep this year, with a great mix of varying tastes being represented. Returning favorites from last year Bean Dip, Erin Healy Designs, PaperRoot, and Indi Loves Harlie will be in full force this year showing new collections as well as hard to find items from their past releases. As usual, there is a number of newcomers looking to make their mark on the fashion scene. One newcomer, Tara Ferreira Designs, makes one of a kind pieces for men, women, and infants by sewing desings on them using vintage neckties. Another is Michelle Hineline Handbags, whom makes one-of-a-kind handbags from vintage clothing.

One of the big changes at this year’s show is the variety of apparel that will be offered. Over the last couple years, the designers have offered mainly women’s pieces at the Trunk show. However, seeing the imense demand for pieces for men and children, many designers this year have expressed their intent to offer full collections for both men and children at this year’s show. The 3rd Annual Big Trunk Show is sure to have something for everyone this year. And being so close to the holidays, it is an easy way to support local artists while taking care of all of your holiday shopping needs.

The Big Trunk Show is a St. Johns Cultural Council event. The SJCC creates strategic alliances to access and utilize existing resources that explore the artistic potential of our artists and community while creating a positive economic impact for the county, the artists, the community and the Cultural Council which reinvests into community programs, art education, cultural real estate, cultural tourism, art in public places.

A longtime friend of Definitive Jux leader El-P, rapper Murs first appeared as a solo artist in 2003, after nearly a decade of working with various groups in the underground. Based in Los Angeles, his first single was released in 1993, and came from a self-released album by his first group, 3 Melancholy Gypsies. The track barely made a dent, but it did catch the attention of indie hip-hop fans in the area. Through time, the group members became friends with Mystik Journeymen, who asked 3MG (their shortened name) to join him when he started the Living Legends collective in 1996.
Between both 3MG and the Living Legends, Murs rapped on several influential indie rap albums, appearing on more than 20 records, EPs, and singles within a seven-year period. When El-P started to pull together his Def Jux label, Murs contacted the producer and told him he would release his solo record for the company once he had the opportunity. His commitments to both the Legends and 3MG often kept him from working on the album, but after a few years of slowly putting together tracks, Murs finally delivered The End of the Beginning in the spring of 2003.

Featuring flashier production than his group projects, the album was more in tune with a mainstream hip-hop record, though projects with Anticon rapper Slug under the name Felt — A Tribute to Christina Ricci and A Tribute to Lisa Bonet — unveiled a more experimental side to his artistry. The rapper returned to solo work with Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition, a collaboration with producer 9th Wonder, in 2004. One of the tracks from that album, “Walk Like a Man,” inspired a movie starring Murs himself, along with Damien Wigfall. The soundtrack, Walk Like a Man, also appeared in mid-2005. Murs teamed up again with 9th Wonder to release Murray’s Revenge in 2006. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide

It’s beyond fitting that Neva Dinova has found a new home at Saddle Creek. You May Already Be Dreaming, the band’s third full-length and first since 2005’s The Hate Yourself Change (Crank/Sidecho) is a lush, largely electric affair rich with the rural textures that pepper releases from the band’s Omaha contemporaries. Having been a staple in the scene since guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Jake Bellows and bassist Heath Koontz began collaborating in the early nineties, Neva Dinova (named after Bellows’ grandmother) have continually evolved their melancholic sound, making masterful use of counterbalanced melodies and poetic lyricism. Bellows began composing songs for You May Already Be Dreaming two years ago, but he and the band (including Good Life drummer Roger Lewis) were fated to overcome a number of obstacles before the recording process would even begin. First, Bellows realized that he wanted to re-work a number of song ideas on his own—following that arduous but exciting process, the band experienced a flood that destroyed portions of their equipment. If that wasn’t enough, Bellows unfortunately found himself in a self-described “barroom tussle” that resulted in the complete and tragic blowout of his left eardrum. Fortunately, he and his ear recovered fully, and Neva Dinova was able to resume recording. From the spacious guitar washes of “A Man and His Dream” to the sweeping, dusty strength of “Clouds”, this is the band’s most fluid and realized effort to date. You May Already Be Dreaming was self-recorded in the corner of a friend’s warehouse space in Omaha, NE, and later mixed with the help of Ian Aiello at Presto!, Mike Mogis’ recording studio, in the fall of 2007.

In perfect symbiosis, the two disciplines of performance and songwriting combine together to create the unique work for which he is admired by professional peers and audiences alike. Oh - and a pretty damn fine singer too. Thank goodness he doesn’t play the flute.”

Rosa Loves 2-Year Birthday Celebration

CAFÉ ELEVEN TO HOST “ROSA LOVES TWO-YEAR BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION” AND FUNDRAISER ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14

Rosa Loves, a not-for-profit clothing company that designs t-shirts based off of individuals’ stories and sells them to raise money to specifically meet their needs, said it will host a night of silent auctions, live mural paintings, custom t-shirt printing, and dance parties at Cafe Eleven in St. Augustine on October 14 to celebrate Rosa Loves’ second birthday and to raise funds for the expansion plans set for the end of this year.

“First, we meet an individual, family, or a community in need. We get to know them, hear their story, and design a shirt inspired by what we’ve learned,” designer Mike Fretto said. “The outside tells the story through illustration. The inside tells the story through words which are printed directly over the heart. After the projected amount has been made to supply the need, we stop printing and selling the shirt, making each one part of a limited run. Finally, and most importantly, we hand deliver the gift and meet the need. Friendships are made, lives are changed, and the process repeats itself with new people and new needs.”

The latest t-shirt design, which will be released the night of the event, will meet the need for transportation in St. Augustine. All too often, hard-working men and women cannot hold onto jobs because they have no transportation. The newest design will be sold to raise money to provide reliable sources of transportation: new and refurbished bicycles. All proceeds from the t-shirt will be used to buy parts to build bicycles or to purchase brand new bicycles altogether.

In addition to releasing the new design, there will be a silent art auction featuring some of St. Augustine’s best up-and-coming artist. The local artists that will be contributing pieces includes Ty Williams, Danny Jones, Nathan Lewis, Dustin Miller, Nicole Middleton, Joey Tomassoni, Leif Kruse, Becky Ankeny, and Joshua Shirlen For people that are interested in seeing an artist’s process, there will also be a live mural painting by Ty Williams during the event that will be auctioned off in sections. Rosa Loves will also have PaperRoot Clothing printer, Gregory Dettra, on-site to print one-of-a-kind, custom designs onto t-shirts that people bring to them that night, preferably light shirts. The art festivities will be immediately followed by the after-party bithday celebration with music provided by Classic Blends/DJ Hue.

“The mission of Rosa Loves is to better the quality of life for people living in poverty and to engage the public in the tangible process of helping others,” Fretto said. “It does this by providing a sustainable solution for a specific individual, family or community in need through the sale of artful, customized t-shirts.”

Rosa Loves is hosting its ‘Two-Year Birthday Celebration” on Tuesday, October 14th with the art events (FREE ADMISSION) beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Cafe Eleven, 501A1A Beach Blvd. The After-Party begins at 10:00p.m. with a cover of $10 or $5 for everyone wearing a Rosa Loves t-shirt. All proceeds benefit Rosa Loves 904.460.9311.

Against Me

Monday October 6th, 2008 - $13

The roots of Against Me!’s rousing punk-folk sound lie in Tom Gabel’s guitar-and-stool troubadourship around his native Gainesville, FL, beginning in 1997. The then 17-year-old Gabel performed as a solo act wherever anyone would have him, drawing much influence from early acoustic protest music. The band around him would eventually solidify by 2001 — including guitarist James Bowman, drummer Warren Oakes, and bassist Andrew Seward — and get considerably louder as punk bands often do. But there would always be some anarchism and Billy Bragg in the raucous braggadocio. After a few initial 12″ and 7″ releases, Against Me! issued the fan-favorite Reinventing Axl Rose through No Idea in 2002. The underground hit blended elements of punk, folk, and country into socially conscious and impassioned anthems for late-night basement shows and bars. Continuing their reputation of always being on the road, countless tour dates were played around the country. The slightly more polished As the Eternal Cowboy followed from Fat Wreck in 2003, and after a DVD (We’re Never Going Home) and another 7″, the band returned with their most mature effort to date, 2005’s Searching for a Former Clarity. A subsequent headlining tour in support of the introspective and politically aggressive album saw the band proudly hitting every U.S. state. They signed to Sire Records in December 2005 and were back on the road by spring 2006 opening for the Alkaline Trio. That summer found Against Me! on the main stage at Warped Tour, their first time on the festival. Though the guys were officially now on the roster at Sire, they released the live album Americans Abroad!!! Against Me!!! Live in London!!! on Fat Wreck in August 2006. Recorded while on tour in London with Murder By Death, it harnessed the band’s notoriously invigorating live show as well as any album could.

Jacob Marshall and Dave Elkins began what would become Mae by writing their first song, “Embers and Envelopes”, in Marshall’s living room. The band signed with Tooth and Nail Records and released their first album, Destination: Beautiful, in 2003. They released their second full-length album, The Everglow, in 2005. The band toured extensively to promote it, and also performed on the Vans Warped Tour. Mae re-released The Everglow in 2006, adding three new songs and a 2-hour DVD.

Later in 2006, the band announced that they had fulfilled their contract with Tooth & Nail and signed to Capitol Records for their third full-length album. Mae began recording the album in the fall of 2006, working with producer Howard Benson (who has produced albums for Saosin, My Chemical Romance, and Relient K). It is titled Singularity and was released on August 14, 2007. On June 19, 2007, the band released their first single from the upcoming album titled “Sometimes I Can’t Make It Alone”.

According to Elkins in a 2003 interview, while the band members are Christians, Mae is not a “Christian band”.

On September 24, 2007 Mark and Rob parted ways with Mae. The two replacement members for touring are 20-year-old Josiah Schlater on bass and Robert Smith on keyboards. Schlater and Smith are members of the band Tokyo, also from Virginia Beach.

Mae is currently in the studio recording their 4th studio album.

“Music for me is a language like no other; it is my channel of authenticity. I know I’d only be telling half the truth without it..”
- Tracy Grammer

Born in Homestead, Florida and raised in southern California, Grammer comes from a musical family. Cousin Leo Fortin played double trumpets in Lawrence Welk’s band, while her grandmothers and mother played keyboards and accordion. But it was her guitar-playing father who was her first true inspiration.

“When Dad used to get out his lap steel and electric guitars, we’d invite the neighborhood kids over and sing country songs. I’d sit across from my dad and read the music upside-down so I could turn the pages for him. I developed an ear for harmony early on and hardly ever sang the melody,” she muses, “and it drove my little brother crazy.”

Grammer is currently touring in support of FLOWER OF AVALON (Signature Sounds 2005), her much anticipated solo debut. In January 2006, that album showed up on “Best of” lists and listener polls around the country, and was the
#1 most-played album on folk radio across the United States for 2005. We call this a triumph — a testament to the enduring appeal of Carter’s songwriting, and a sign of good things to come for Grammer as she continues on her solo career.
